Please forgive me I was in a hurry and will be back later tonight !I purchased my cruze new 17 months ago and ever since then I have experienced a slow coolant loss as have most other cruze owners. Well I have kept track of they amount of coolant I have used to keep the surge tank full approx 1/3 of a gallon over the past 150k miles. Now the majority of the coolant loss happens during hot summer months with very little loss occuring during the fall and winter months I will confirm this again later this year.
There really has been little effort on my part to prevent this coolant loss with they exception of a pressure check which the results were nominal. Also I have my head under the hood multiple times during the week over the course of the past few months with such high mileage checking for any signs of a visual leakage of any kind oil and coolant and also to inspect the overall condition of the engine. Everything appears to be normal with no visual signs of leakage and the engine appears healthy. But I have noticed over the past 40k miles sort of a wet / dry liquid trail behind the accessory belt leading down from the water pump area.
As far as the coolant loss goes just over a week ago I saw for the first time a small pool of coolant on the passenger side below the engine accumulating on the engine shield maybe an ounce or two but not alot. This happened about 750 miles or 2 days after I replaced the coolant cap with a new cap. Coincidence I dont know but I did read a new cap could help with coolant loss and so far it has slowed down the coolant loss quite a bit with the exception of this outside visable coolant loss. So I cleaned the coolant and have driven 2k miles since and havent noticed any more visable leaking coolant and only a very slight amount of coolant loss from the surge tank much less then normal. Which I think is due to possibly the new cap and also cooler temperatures.
Basically what im tryin to say is over the past 150k miles my water pump is still pumping there are really no major visable leaks. Im not constantly filling the coolant surge tank except for maybe 1/2 to 1 cup per 10k miles during the past extremely hot summer months. This is still a loss of coolant that probably shouldnt happen but well within the normal tolerance for the engine operating conditions. I really dont experience much loss during days that are below 85 to 90F which leads me to believe everything is normal and my engine is working as intended and as far as im concerned I will continue to drive and just keep checkin under the hood.
This is a list of all the maintenance from the past 150k miles
30k a/c not cold - repaired
40k new cabin filter - engine air filter
75k new spark plugs - coil pack
80k new cabin filter - engine air filter
85k new tires
100k replaced oil pan gasket ( leak )
100k replaced valve cover ( leak )
110k new transmission fluid - 56 oz
125k new spark plugs - coil pack
140k coolant flush
140k break fluid flush
140k front end alignment
